Katmai Bird Survey Part I

So while Craig was hard at work last week on the house, I was off for an adventure with the Fish and Wildlife Service.

My friend Jen from Bird TLC referred me to a project that needed some help surveying the Katmai coast for seabirds. Of course I jumped on the opportunity and have been waiting for the call when the weather looked good.

We finally headed out Sunday 5th April, we flew to Kodiak which is only an hour flight from Anchorage.

It was a beautiful morning and flying into Kodiak it looked gorgeous from the air, lots of islands and mountains.

We landed at the massive Kodiak airport and were met by Jeff, the Captain of the Fish and Wildlife vessel that would be our home for the next few days.

The boat is called the Ursa Major II and is about 48 ft long, its a little cramped for 6 people but didn't seem too bad in the end!

We headed out of Kodiak right away to begin our 9 hour voyage up to the Katmai coast. We had 2 skiffs with us so we could have 2 crews out doing surveys at the same time.

Saw tons of Deer on the beach as we cruised through the Kuprenof Strait towards the Shelikof...

and lots of birds, otters and whales. Look closely for the long tailed Ducks!

Once we got near the Katmai coast we launched a skiff to get a head start on the survey.
We met up with them in Geographic Bay where we saw a brown bear on the beach, too much snow for him to be awake yet I think!

no pics of the bear:( I only have a point and shoot camera so I decided to just enjoy him through the binoculars!
I was gone only 5 days, we came back early due to bad weather moving in.
